Produced by Paillard S.A. of Switzerland, the Hermes Baby is regarded as one of the most significant portable typewriters of the 20th century. First introduced in 1935 by engineer Giuseppe Prezioso, it was the world’s first ultra-slim model to feature a full four-row keyboard, an innovation that set a new standard in compact mechanical design.
By 1959, the Hermes Baby had evolved into a refined, reliable writing machine favoured by leading literary voices and foreign correspondents alike. William S. Burroughs, a central figure of the Beat Generation, used one during his travels abroad, drawn to its quiet operation and dependable build during a time of global uncertainty.
Lightweight, minimalist, and engineered with Swiss precision, the Hermes Baby became a trusted companion in the Cold War era, valued for both its discretion and its durability.
This example has been professionally serviced, fitted with a new ribbon, and types cleanly and evenly. The original hard-shell carry case is included. It remains in excellent condition.
A true mid-century artifact - functional, collectible, and ready for use or display.
